To The Editor:

Sunday, October 6, 2013, “Illuminate Sunday,” a united effort to show our
state the need to ensure that the abortion industry of West Virginia is
operating safely. We are motivated by the words of Ephesians 5:11-13 that
encourages everyone to, “Eph 5:11 And have no fellowship with the
unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.
Eph 5:12 For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of
them in secret.” Please join us in prayer as we seek to illuminate the
moral tragedy of abortion and bring about change.

The Illuminate Campaign has 3 Objectives: 1. The Illuminate Campaign seeks
to illuminate the dangerous and secretive work of an abortion industry that
seeks to take taxpayer dollars without having public oversight since 1976.
2. The Illuminate Campaign seeks to mobilize comments by West Virginians and
pro-life organizations as requested by the West Virginia Attorney General in
support of reasonable health and safety regulations of an otherwise
unregulated abortion industry. 3. The Illuminate Campaign seeks to provide
support and encouragement to lawmakers in the passage of reasonable health
and safety regulations of an otherwise unregulated abortion industry and
hold accountable those lawmakers who refuse to ensure the health and safety
of our state’s sisters and daughters.

The background for this campaign is that on June 10, 2013 the Family Policy
Counsel of WV and the Alliance Defending Freedom filed a medical malpractice
lawsuit against Dr. Rodney Lee Stephens and Women’s Health Center of West
Virginia, Inc. The suit alleges that the defendants ignored the plaintiff’s
instructions to stop the procedure, physically restrained her during the
procedure, and failed to remove her baby’s head from her uterus.

This groundbreaking lawsuit has been addressed by WV Attorney General
Patrick Morrisey. Morrisey’s office has responded by beginning an
investigation into the state’s abortion clinics to check their regulations.
Unfortunately, WV has no regulations for abortion clinics, and legislators
are now beginning to consider the serious nature and consequences of
operating a health clinic without health and safety regulations.
