Dr. Robert L. Horton writes:

“Binary Truths

There is much criticism in mainstream media, in social media, and even churches (consider the recent Revoice Conference) of binary thinking. Most of this comes from the LGBT movement advocating that society needs to recognize more than just male and female genders, that the world includes more than just two options, a binary selection.

In contrast to this thinking, however, the Bible is filled with binary truths. The ultimate binary truth which determines our understanding for all other categories is the distinction between God and everything else. God alone is absolute and uncreated, everything else is created. Then there is the binary distinction between man, made in the image of God, and all other living creatures. God created man, male and female, another important, significant, and permanent binary truth. The first family quickly divided into two streams, with Abel worshiping God by faith, and Cain, the murderer, a rebel against God. This lead to the binary truth that likewise continues throughout human history: there are those who “call on the name of the Lord” (Gen. 4:26) and all others.

To illustrate this last point, consider Proverbs 15:8, “The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord, but the prayer of the upright is His delight.” God sees all mankind with a binary distinction. He takes delight in some, and others are an abomination to Him. A sacrifice is an act of worship in which the person devotes something of value to his deity. But despite the religious motions of the wicked, God rejects the person and his offering. On the other hand, the mere prayer of the righteous person pleases God. From God’s viewpoint, there is a binary distinction of mankind. Jesus spoke of the final judgment in terms of sheep and goats. “The sheep hear His voice” (John 10:3). Be sure you are listening to Him.”
