Joel 2:1-32

And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out My Spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions (2:28).

The Monument To A Slave

There is no finer illustration of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit than that seen in John Jasper. Many learned professors of homiletics (the art of preaching) write that the greatest genius in the ministry that America has ever produced is John Jasper, a Negro slave. As he sorted out tobacco with his hands in the warehouse, the Holy Spirit of God came upon him. He became one of the greatest preachers in American history.

During a visit I made to Richmond, Virginia, the Foreign Mission Board sent a young man out to the airport to meet me and take me to the board meeting. Driving into the city down a freeway, we came to a big bend in the highway. I remarked, “This freeway should go straight!” The young man told me that when the highway department condemned all the property by eminent domain for the building of this great expressway, they went to the church of John Jasper, the Sixth Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Richmond. The people of Richmond said, “Do not touch one brick of this church. It shall stand here as a monument to the preaching of the slave, John Jasper.” When one drives into the city of Richmond down the freeway, he will drive around a great bend, and there in the bend stands the Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Church, a monument to the slave John Jasper. God shall pour out His Spirit upon all–slave as well as free.
